Proposed development
threatens city's waterfront
I would like to thank the
Key West Citizen newspaper for [its] commitment to the residents of the
Keys in keeping us informed about the issues and decisions being made by
our local, regional and state government bodies.
Several years ago, I
lamented the doubling of The Citizen's cost. A young journalist friend
brought to my attention how exceptionally fortunate Key West is in
having a genuine local newspaper. I have gained a new respect for
reporters who attend many meetings daily of amazing length and agonizing
repetition and still manage to write clear, succinct and accurate
paragraphs in the next day's newspaper.
Your coverage of the
Jabour's Trailer Court sale to the developers, Caroline Street Partners,
continues to keep us informed. Currently, 300 citizens of Key West have
signed a petition urging the city of Key West to not issue any building
permits until developers have modified the proposed plans for their
overly-tall development to meet the height, density and landscaping
requirements for the historic district.
The buildings, as designed,
do not fit the neighborhood of the Maritime Heritage District, whose
purpose is to preserve the historic character of a working waterfront.
This is a Public Lands Trust area. The citizens of Key West authorized
the city, by public referendum, to purchase the bight to prevent further
erosion of the waterfront's character.
Thank you, Key West, for
your support of this issue.
