Overdevelopment is killing the Keys
EDITOR:
A majority
of the Monroe County commissioners, with the help of state Rep. Ken
Sorensen, are trying to remove the Florida Keys' designation as an Area
of Critical State Concern. If this effort succeeds, it will remove a
major barrier to overdevelopment in the Keys.
The three-tier land-mapping system is also under
pressure by the county commissioners to be changed to a two-tier system.
This would also encourage overdevelopment in the Keys.
Incorporation of areas such as Islamorada and
Marathon has already contributed to overdevelopment in those cities and
is one of the reasons that incorporation attempts in the Lower Keys and
Key Largo failed when put to a vote.
My wife and I
moved to Big Pine Key in 1995. We intend to spend the rest of our lives
in what everyone calls paradise. If the present commission majority
continues to support the removal of barriers to overdevelopment,
paradise will be lost forever, just like it has in many areas of the
Florida mainland.
Some of my friends and acquaintances have sold or
are trying to sell their homes and move elsewhere. Some of them stated
that one of the reasons for leaving is the seemingly insatiable appetite
of developers working hand in hand with the voting majority to break
down any and all barriers to overdevelopment.
All concerned citizens of the Keys should contact
their local county commissioner and make them aware of your concerns
before it is too late and paradise is lost forever.
