Last Stand's
"Protecting Paradise"
2007
|
 |
|
Over 130 Last Stand members, friends,
and guests enjoyed 2007's Protecting Paradise, our big annual
fundraising bash, Thursday, March 8.
We partied down at Shirley Freeman's
home, the historic Freeman-Curry House on Eaton Street. Shirley and Harvey
are delightful hosts, and the house is beautiful. |

It was a
gorgeous evening. Members and guests mingled and talked
while nibbling on a variety of eats catered by Small Chef at Large, Jennifer
Cornell.
Guest bartenders Audree Chase, Marci Rose, and Jeff Ware kept the
glasses full. |

| Music for PP07 was by Skipper Kripitz
and Friends, a combo of keyboards, fiddle and percussion that was just perfect
for the evening. |

The Silent Auction was a great success,
with nearly 50 items graciously donated by local artists,
writers, restaurateurs, merchants and individuals.
We thank those who
donated items for the auction, and we thank those who bid on them.
Into the evening, the assembled crowd listened
attentively while three distinguished members and supporters briefly spoke.
Shirley Freeman welcomed Last Stand's members and friends to her beautiful home,
and thanked Last Stand for our strong efforts over our twenty years of helping
keep Key West remain the Key West we love.

Al Sullivan, new Board President for
2007, gave a brief pep talk to those assembled, reminding all that legal battles
and other things we do cost money, and that is why we have fundraisers -- well,
that, and to have fun and enjoy each others' company.
Captain Ed
Davidson, Chair of the Florida Keys Citizens' Coalition and longtime Keys
environmental activist, gave a brief historical perspective on environmental
battles in the Keys. He emphasized that environmental groups such as Last
Stand and the Citizens' Coalition are major reasons why the Keys don't look like
Miami Beach, but that pressure to overdevelop never ends. |
| Last Stand heartily thanks Shirley and Harvey for
their wonderful hospitality and inviting us into their home. We thank the
members and supporters of Last Stand for attending and for making silent auction
purchases, and thanks to all our volunteers. |
